In case you have no clue what this is about, here’s a little recap: President Donald Trump nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to become an Associate Judge of the Supreme Court on July 9, 2018, to fill the vacancy left by the retirement of Anthony Kennedy. Since then, Kavanaugh has been accused by Dr Christine Blasey Ford of sexually assaulting her, while they were both in high school. In response to the sexual assault allegations, the White House said it is not withdrawing its nomination but that the confirmation would not proceed until both Ford and Kavanaugh responded in a hearing.

A hearing in front of the US Senate took place yesterday, where both Dr Ford and Kavanaugh testified.

That’s the story in a nutshell.

Obviously this is a classic ‘his word against hers’ and we could debate who we believe and why till we are blue in the face, but I actually want to talk about a few other things:

For one, there are many people out there who are trying to push the conversation towards politics. How it’s all about blocking Trupm’s nominee etc when in fact, one of the real issues under all the bullshit, even before Ford accussed Kavanaugh of sexual assault, is women’s rights

You see, appointing Mr Kavanaugh would tip the court’s balance in favour of Republicans which sparked a real fear amongst women that landmark Roe v Wade legislation that granted the right to abortion could be overturned. So as far as I can tell, not so much ‘politics’ per say, more like ‘do we really want a room full of conservative men deciding on what we can or cannot do with our bodies’ type of thing.

Secondly, and this is the main thing we should all be talking about in my opinion – is the reaction to the accusations among some of Kavanaugh supporters. If you listen closely to what they are saying, it does make you wonder if they are confessing to sexual assault themselves?

Yeah, apparently according to some other rich white men, what Kavanaugh is being accused of falls into ‘what people do in high school’.

Guys, listen up – it is never okay to grope someone and try to rape them… not even in high school.

I’m afraid that type of argument falls under the same BS argument people make when they are being accused of making a racist Tweet ten years ago – “everyone was doing it at the time”. Well, guess what? Not EVERYONE was doing it. Only racicst assholes were.

So yeah, I know we have a history of sexual harassment and rape culture that was totally acceptable, even in movies (take a movie like ‘Sixteen Candles’ for example when the ‘nerd’ has sex with the homecoming queen who is literally in a coma and has no idea who she is sleeping with – this is rape people), but the idea that everyone was up to it and thus it’s okay is so far fetched and ludicrous, it’s almost funny.

No.

Good guys do not grope, rape, assault or harass. No now, not ever.

End of story.

Who the senate will decide to believe is another story. Will Kavanaugh become a Supreme Court judge for the rest of his life is still unknown, but one thing we have learnt from this and that is that many men still don’t think that laying on a women, covering her mouth and groping her is wrong because “everyone was doing it”.

And THAT is what we should be focusing on.
