The Mental Load

Have you ever heard of the “mental load”? It refers to the cognitive burden and emotional labor associated with managing various aspects of life (work, family, kids, house), often falling disproportionately on women, due to deeply ingrained societal norms and gender roles. It doesn’t even have to mean doing more but rather the organisation and managing of it all - basically making sure things happens. It’s often referred to as “invisible labour” because it’s almost hard to explain but It’s the number one reason why so many women are simply exhausted. A more fair distribution of the mental load requires challenging and redefining traditional gender roles within relationships and society at large. But it also requires an understanding that doing more is not enough. It’s not about asking “what task needs to be done?” it’s about KNOWING what the tasks are and attending to them without someone else asking/reminding you about them. It’s about sharing the responsibility for the actual THINKING. Does that make sense? Would love to hear your thoughts on the above, and hope you like our song too 🙏🏻 TAG A FRIEND and let’s talk about it!
