FRANCE: ABORTION RIGHTS IN CONSTITUTION

Yesterday France became the first country IN THE WORLD to explicitly include the right to abortion in its constitution. The decision to "guarantee freedom" for women was voted on by Parliament and the country's 1958 constitution was revised after an overwhelming 780-72 result.

When I told my husband the news his reaction was "can't believe it's taken so long". Of course he can't believe it, he is a man and therefore is not familiar with having no say over his own body.

That's exactly the point.

I know that abortion debate polarises people, but as someone who does support a woman's right to have freedom to decide over her own body with her doctor, and who does see this as a basic right that should be protected in a constitution like any other basic right, I personally think this marks a very important day for women everywhere, nit just in France.

Too often the life of women is discarded.

We see this in medicine, in laws, in safety features of cars, in victim blaming, in education etc, etc... our system is rigged against women in so many ways we have been conditioned to accept and this my friends is a moment of taking back some authority and control over ourselves, not so we can abuse power or hurt other, not so that we make choices recklessly and without weighing all consequences and options, but rather so that we can make the best educated choices for ourselves, and live as we wish with dignity and autonomy.

That is the definition of freedom and I hope to see the day all women and girls have it.
