Why We Should Focus On Women's Achievements & Not Their Bodies
Vanity Fair’s cover for the 28th annual Hollywood Issue features eight celebrities on different covers, one of them being Nicole Kidman wearing a matching Miu Miu black mini skirt and bra top has sparked yet another debate about women's bodies on the internet ('should a 50 something women be wearing that?') and distracted everything from recognising her professional achievements in favour of counting her abs.
Hello, World!
Personally I don't care to discuss Nicole's body or her choice in clothing and I think we should all leave that part of the conversation to one side - why? Because for one, no matter what women do, we never win. The argument "well if she didn't want people to focus on her body she should have covered up" is a lie. Women's bodies are discussed regardless and no matter what we do - if you've had plastic surgery you're 'pathetic', if you haven't then 'you've let yourself go, if you dress sexy at 50 you're 'desperate' and if you don't you're 'frumpy'.
Get the picture?
But also (and more importantly) because we have better things to talk about ladies! The whole BODY thing is a distraction from the real issues we need to address, it's a tool to keep us busy, so please don't let it.
What is more relevant to discuss are two things:
1) Photoshopping - if used, photoshopping should come with a disclaimer because distorted body expectations in the media/ fashion magazines/ social media etc have been linked to eating disorders, low self esteem and even mental health issues amongst women and specifically young people and it's about time big platforms/ companies and even celebrities took responsibility for their actions.
2) Nicole Kidman's achievements as an actress. For those who don't know, she is nominated for the Best Actress Oscar for her role as Lucille Ball in ‘Being The Ricardos’. This is her fifth Oscar nomination overall and her first since 2016 when she was nominated for best supporting actress in Lion. Previously she won Best Actress for The Hours at the 2003 Academy Awards. She is also a two time Golden Globe winner, a producer and a Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women.
In short, let's put women's achievements at the forefront ladies, everything else is just noise.
